Msi For Microsoft Teams

  • I recently asked a question on here about which laptop to buy and am close to deciding my purchase. Full blown gaming laptops, such as the 2 you’ve mentioned, are probably overkill for DJing. A lot of comments came back about Mac’s, but I’m not prepared to spend the money for a 15″ Mac and have to work around the low storage capability. Top end gaming machines will have high spec video cards that you won’t utilise, plus a top end processor that you don’t need. In fact my IT guy at work has suggested an i5 as it doesn’t run as hot as an i7 and I don’t require the extra processing power.

The machines I’m leaning towards could be classed as mid to low level gaming machines. My main contender at present is http://www.scan.co.uk/3xs They have a Pro Audio laptop that can be customised with the spec you want, SSD, HHD, operating system, etc. It may not look at glossy as the 2 you mentioned but I’m not worried about that.

Personally I think the storage space need not be a problem. You can DJ with an external HD (I have done for a long time) if need be.

More importantly, if 256GB (or worse, 512GB) isn’t enough (and that is for SSDs, not HDs – you can’t even get HDs under 500GB anymore), you have to seriously reconsider your collection. Unless you plan on going lossless all the way, that is just WAYYYYY too much music.

On a side note. Gaming laptops have a totally different set of specs than needed for DJ-ing. Like extreme graphics, essential for gaming, hardly relevant for DJ-ing. Often better on-board sound, great for gaming, not relevant for DJ-ing. Whopping 6 to 8-core or extreme edition quad core CPUs. Again, super for gaming, but any DJ software will run just fine on a modern day dual-core i5. Tons of internal memory (both for the videocard and the CPU). Same story, 8GB of normal RAM would suffice. And all these extra features that you really don’t need for DJ-ing raise the price of the machine significantly. Not sure what you mean by a lightshow on the laptop, but I am trying to find ways to move my laptop to the side and as much “invisible” as possible. I doubt many people are gonna go ape on the dancefloor because the DJ has a flashing laptop 😀 Clearly, if it tickles your fancy and that is what you want, it will clearly work. It’ll just be overkill as the previous poster says.

At the end of the day, the MacBook really is the best option (imho) for the purpose of DJ-ing (not saying go Apple on anything else computerwise – rather don’t LOL). I’d spend a lot less than that 3k on a young (1,5 – 2 years) used MacBook (they keep their value pretty good so if you don’t like it you can always dump it or trade it in on a new gaming laptop) and see how you like it. If you do like it, that leaves some money in your pocket for lights, PA, controllers, music or any of the other numerous things for DJs that all cost money (lots of it in most cases).

Just my two cents as usual.

A thought, though… a gaming laptop might be overkill for DJing (though it’s what I use), but if you also want to get into producing, then a gaming laptop becomes a better choice since production is MUCH more resource intensive than DJing.

    Hey Deathy,

Although I agree that if you production an i7 is preferable to an i5 and 12 or 16GB to 8GB, but major videocards and other specific gaming enhancements are still overdone imho and you pay for them. I have seen people do totally acceptable production work on a 2 year old MacBook Pro with an i5 and 8GB memory.

Gaming laptop for DJ purposes os a waste of money. You need an i5 CPU, 4-8gb RAM and a SSD at least 256gb in capacity. And usb ports :-/
Everything else is superfluous and costs more.

If it’s a Windows machine then demand you get the OS disc with the laptop because the first thing you will be doing is wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows from scratch to get rid of any bloat ware or other junk that comes preinstalled on it from the shop.
It’s up to you if you think a Mac is worth the money, they’re nice but they don’t do anything a PC laptop doesn’t do already and they can still crash or go wrong.

Addendum: With regard to the space needed for your music collection, I’ve been gigging most weekends for years doing 5-6 hour sets of multi genre music and my collection is still less than 80gb.

Actually there is one thing Macs can do that “cheap” Windows laptops cannot do, I found out again this weekend.
In a DJ booth in a crowded club with lights shining into the booth the surface of the booth can easily get to 40+°C and more.
The cheap 400 bucks toy PC from the other DJ went down after 30min and was gone for it -> heat.
I was actually only still there for some chat with the owner, but I pulled out my 8 year old MacBook and played the rest of the night without a problem.

Now I do not say that there are not windows machines that can also stay cool, but an HP zBook 820 is the same 1900 bucks as a MacBook pro with Retina Display… you always get what you pay for.

Vashti – It sounds like one of the internal fans got damaged to me.

Chuck – Yeah, the video card is certainly overkill for most DJ software. I’m thinking about leveraging the GPU for doing the heavy lifting in my software, since it’s there and MUCH better suited to doing the math than a general purpose CPU.

Well Deathy, I think THAT might just be slightly beyond the scope of most or our readers ROFL

heh. Yeah, although I would not be surprised to see more DJ software start to offer the option of leveraging the GPU, since it would do amazing things for making their software run on lower spec machines.

A good gaming laptop would be great for djing. It all depends on the laptop’s specs, gaming isn’t always about video cards and visuals. Now-a-days gaming laptops come with the whole package and have Soundblaster sound Cards in it for surround sound. I had an acer laptop that was good for running programs but not music, thus I brought an external Soundblaster sound card. Its all about what the software needs and if the laptop meets higher specs. In addition to that don’t buy a laptop based on a programs minimum specs try to get higher.

Hi Emazing, you kinda re-made my point. There is all kinds of stuff in a gaming laptop that you don’t need for sound work. But stuff in a laptop always costs money. Who needs a soundblaster (surround even, what DJ needs surround from his laptop?) card in a DJ laptop? I could do with a laptop with NO soundcard, so any money invested by the manufacturer in putting in better sound is money that didn’t go to the things I WOULD like to have.

+1 for getting something with more oomph than the minimum specs.
